Vestry

The vestry is the elected governing body of the church. St. Mary’s vestry consists of 12 lay members of the congregation and the rector. Four members are elected to three-year terms each year at the annual meeting. The Vestry typically meets on the second Tuesday of most months.

The Vestry Announces the Anti-Racism Committee

In June 2020, the Vestry drafted a “Statement on Racial Injustice and Violence” in light of the Black Lives Matter protests that happened during spring 2020. You can read that statement further down on this page.

The Vestry has continually pledged to live out the commitments of that statement. We have repeatedly said that these will not just be empty promises.

As a first step, the Vestry read and discussed Layla Saad’s Me and White Supremacy during fall 2020. We then broke into groups and investigated various resources. In early 2022, we decided that it will be necessary and prudent to form a standing St. Mary’s Committee (like the Personnel and Investment Committees) to take over and continue this work. Statement from St. Mary’s Vestry on Racial Injustice and Violence

St. Mary’s does not have a history of making frequent statements on matters of the day, but sometimes we feel compelled to do so. Now is such a time. We are unequivocal in our opposition to racism in all forms (both individual and systemic racism) as counter to our faith as followers of Jesus. Please read the rest of the Vestry's statement here.
