Isaiah's Promise - A Rich Banquet for All

One of the things I do, in addition to coordinating volunteers for Saturday Breakfast, is serve as a lector for the 9:30 service. My November 3rd reading was Isaiah 25:6-9. As I prepared, I realized that we all deserve this promise from Isaiah:

On this mountain

the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples

a feast of rich food,

a feast of well-aged wines,

of rich food filled with marrow,

of well-aged wines strained clear.

While Isaiah is sometimes called “The Fifth Gospel” because Christians tend to read it as prophesy fulfilled, I have my own understanding (I think not unique) that we are God’s hands in the world, as was Jesus. This prayer attributed to St. Teresa of Avila sums it up for me:

Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks with Compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Saturday Breakfast is a weekly ministry that strives to carry out this charge in our community. We may not be providing a feast rich in marrow, but the eggs and oatmeal are pretty tasty and a treat for those who don’t get that kind of breakfast every day. Please feel free to join us Saturday mornings.
