Happy 4th Sunday of Advent to you! ¡Feliz cuarto domingo de Adviento a ustedes! I read that that this happens once every seven years. Fourth Sunday of Advent on Christmas Eve. So we are ALMOST to Christmas, but not quite there yet!
Our Gospel lesson for this morning is the story of the annunciation. The angel Gabriel coming to Mary to bring this wildly extraordinary, life-changing news.
“Greetings favored one! The Lord is with you.” Understandably, Mary was “quite perplexed” and wondered what sort of greeting this was. Well, YES, when the Archangel Gabriel comes to you in full splendor and dazzling raiment, you are bound to be quite perplexed. I would even say, awestruck, amazed, dazed, and confused. Notice the first proclamation. “Greetings favored one. God is with you.” Mary has found favor with God. God is with her. What a lovely and powerful proclamation and affirmation for Mary to hear. God sees you. God knows you. God loves you and is WITH you.
Nuestro evangelio de hoy día es la historia de la anunciación del ángel Gabriel a la virgen María. Este mensaje completamente extraordinario que va a cambiar la vida de esta adolescente para siempre. “¡Salve, llena de gracia! El Señor está contigo.” Claro que María “se sorprendió de estas palabras” y “se preguntaba de que significaría aquel saludo.” Bueno, cuando viene el Arcángel Gabriel en todo esplendor y vestimenta brillante es seguro que uno se sorprende. Yo diría que María estaba deslumbrada, asombrada, aturdida, y confundida. Mira lo que proclama el ángel. “¡Salve, llena de gracia! El Señor está contigo.” María ha recibido toda la gracia de Dios. El Señor está con ella. Que proclamación tan hermosa y poderosa. Dios te vea. Dios te conoce. Dios te ama y ESTÁ contigo.
After the proclamation of the favor and presence of God, Gabriel brings this life-shattering news. Mary, the teenage virgin, will conceive and bear a son. Not just any son, but the Son of the Most High who will inherit the throne of David and reign over the house of Jacob forever in an everlasting kingdom. Mary has questions, lots of questions. How can this be? It’s too much, beyond imagining. Mary wonders. Mary is unsure. Mary doubts. Mary needs more information. JUST LIKE US, RIGHT? The angel Gabriel doesn’t dismiss her doubts, but takes the time to explain and answer her questions. In fact, Gabriel goes so far as to provide a very real connection, the wisdom and experience of an aunt, Elizabeth,
to guide and accompany her in this amazing experience. Nothing will be impossible with God! Then Mary said. THEN, then she leapt out in faith, OK, I think I understand a bit better. I’ll definitely go see my aunt to talk about all this together. With your loving assurance, with your presence, if YOU are with me, and my family is with me: “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”
Después de esta proclamación de la gracia y presencia de Dios, Gabriel lleva este mensaje que cambiará la vida de María en todo sentido. “Ahora vas a quedar encinta: tendrás un hijo…no como otros hijos, lo llamará Hijo de Dios Altísimo, y Dios lo hará Rey como su antepasado David, para que reine por siempre sobre el pueblo de Jacob y su reino no tendrá fin.” Claro que María tiene preguntas, muchas preguntas. ¿Cómo podrá suceder esto? Eso es demasiado. No lo puedo imaginar. María se pregunta. María no es segura. Tiene dudas. Necesita mas información.
IGUAL COMO NOSOTROS, ¿NO? El ángel Gabriel no descarta sus preguntas y dudas, pero tomo el tiempo para explicar y responder. Más que esto, Gabriel le da una conexión humana. La sabiduría y experiencia de su tía Isabel para guiar y acompañarla por esta experiencia tan extraordinaria. Para Dios, no hay nada imposible. Entonces María dijo. ENTONCES, pudo responder en fe, creo que entiendo un poco mejor, claro que voy a visitar a mi tía y pedir su consejo.
Con tu gracia, con tu amor y presencia, si TÚ O Señor estás conmigo y mi familia también: “Yo soy esclava del Señor; que Dios haga conmigo como me has dicho.”
The story of the annunciation is a story of an amazing young woman who experiences the grace and loving presence of God. It is also the story of a person just like you and me, who doubts, and who questions. In Mary we see that doubts are good, normal and perfectly OK. In the angel Gabriel speaking God’s message, we see that our good and loving God hears our questions, honors them, and is willing to answer them to provide ways for us to grow our faith and to grow our relationship with God because OF and thanks TO, our questions. And so, my siblings in Christ, on this fourth Sunday of Advent, know that our doubts and uncertainties are the very means by which we are brought closer to God. Through our wonderings and wanderings TOGETHER, we grow closer as we seek. And together, in our doubts with Mary, we can say to God, “Here am I. Take me as I am. I am willing to get to know you better Lord. Let it be done to me according to your loving providence.” Amen.
La historia de la anunciación es historia de una joven extraordinaria quien experimenta la gracia y amorosa presencia de Dios. También es historia de una persona como nosotros, una persona con dudas y preguntas. En María vemos que las dudas y preguntas de fe son buenas y normales. En el mensaje del ángel Gabriel hablando por Dios, vemos que nuestro buen Dios de amor oye nuestras preguntas, las honra, y nos ayuda a buscar respuestas como manera de crecer nuestra fe. Entonces, mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, este cuarto domingo de Adviento, sepan que nuestras dudas, preguntas, e incertidumbres nos ayudan a juntarnos a Dios. Mientras nos preguntamos y caminamos juntos, nos acercamos en nuestra búsqueda. Juntos en nuestras dudas, con María, virgen y Madre de Dios, podemos decir a Dios: “Yo soy esclava del Señor; que Dios haga conmigo como me has dicho.” Amén.
