Gratitude and Presence: Seeing God's Grace in the Midst of our Lives

“And now that it appears we’re approaching the edge of the desert, we’re beginning to see signs of green, what do we see on the horizon but Jerusalem, and the emotional rollercoaster of Holy Week. Do we even have the energy to enter the city? And what if the green we think we see is only a mirage, and this desert we’re in is simply going to go on forever? We are so tired, and even those of us comfortable with solitude are by now simply feeling lonely. Like the Greeks in today’s Gospel, we would so love to be able to turn to Philip and say, Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

Is this really a time for gratitude?

“my friends in Christ, I encourage you this day to set aside a little time, not just for feasting, not just for celebrating and relaxing and resting, but set aside some time to name those things for which you are grateful. Take the time to figure it out, name it, and offer up your thanks to God who is showering down love upon you, even in the midst of all that we face.”

Offering Thanks Even in a Pandemic

For me, this year as we have been working our way through the Epistles, I have been connecting with them in a new way. I am connecting with Paul in a new way. The past month or so we have been working our way through Paul’s letter to the Phillipians, and today we move on to Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. We will be here about a month, we’ll take one week off for All Saints Sunday, but over the next month or so we are going to make our way through Paul’s letter to this community, the church of the Thessalonians.
