Feast Days

God's Loving Gaze

Happy Saint Mary’s day! Saint Mary, the namesake of the community where we worship, serve, and grow in faith. When you think of Mary, what images come to mind? What stories, pictures, music, poems, what words to describe her? Countless pieces of art have sought to portray Mary throughout the ages. What can Mary’s own words at her cousin Elizabeth’s house reveal to us about who Mary is and how God relates, and acts in our world today?

Welcomed to the Table: Made in the Image of a Triune God

“You know me. I love the Church Year. The Church Year has a shape to it, and when we allow that shape of the Church Year to shape our lives, it can draw us closer to God. It can draw us into holiness. There are so many beautiful things about the Church Year. Each season has a richness and meaning that can help form us. But the year is also beautiful in its larger overarching shape as we have been talking about the last few weeks.”

The Holy Spirit still comes

Happy Pentecost! Today is the Feast of Pentecost, one of the three most important days of the Church Year. You have Christmas, you have Easter, and you have Pentecost, the Holy Trinity of Feast days. Pentecost is as important as the first two, although it doesn't quite get the celebration that they do, but for the Church it is just as important. Today is the day we often call "the birthday of the Church."

What do we mean by that?

Where was Jesus born? Where is God incarnate?

"Theologically, the creche tradition is a beautiful visual representation of Incarnation. Yes, God became flesh in a particular time and place over 2000 years ago in Bethlehem, but scripture reminds us, scripture teaches us that the Christ is not limited only to that one particular moment, place, and time. Christ is Incarnate in our particularities, as well. Christ is with us as a baby in Peru, or an infant in Kenya."

Is this really a time for gratitude?

“my friends in Christ, I encourage you this day to set aside a little time, not just for feasting, not just for celebrating and relaxing and resting, but set aside some time to name those things for which you are grateful. Take the time to figure it out, name it, and offer up your thanks to God who is showering down love upon you, even in the midst of all that we face.”
